About Bob & Jenny

BOB SHOULDER is the founder member of Childrens Charity Direct

He and his siblings grew up with next to nothing, only the bare essentials - so he knows what it is like to live hand-to-mouth.

After leaving school in the mid 1960's, he was lucky enough to serve as an apprentice in the plumbing and industrial heating industry, in which he remained for 40 years eventually becoming self-employed and with his own company.

Bob's partner Jennifer  was born in Sevenoaks Kent. After leaving school she did an apprenticeship in a restaurant in Sevenoaks gaining 2 C&Guilds in catering. She met Bob in 2001.

The start of the Charity

I flew out to Mombasa, Kenya in February 2009 for 4 weeks to do what I could to make life easier for these unfortunate kids. At the Tumaini Orphanage, Bamburi, they were reasonably well-looked after, with good sponsors already in place. I then travelled to the Restoration Orphanage, where there were 26 kids with not even enough food for a meal that night. I went to the local 'shack' and bought them maize, beans, peas and oats so that they could eat. Some of the kids were deaf and dumb and most had no shoes. There is no work in the area for the adults - if they are lucky enough to find any, they receive as little as £2 per day.

What we aim to do and how we like to help

These kids have so little but are always smiling, and they really touched my heart. I came back to the UK determined to continue to make their lives a little easier and I hope you can help me reach the target needed to do this. I would like to thank all those people who have donated or supported this project already. I would not have got even this far by myself."
